A common Perennial submerged aquatic freshwater plant, widespread and common in still or slow flowing waters in northern latitudes, producing floating and submersed leaves on the same plant. Dark green oval leathery floating leaves with pointed tips are 5–12cm (2–4.75in) long on stems to 2m (6ft 6in) long possibly longer, submerged leaves are linear. Small green–nwhite plantain like flower spikes 5–10cm (2–4in) long without petals during May to September. Grows in lakes, ponds, slow rivers and ditches in highly organic mud from a rhizome.
