Small Flowered Geranium - Geranium pusillum
Family - Geraniaceae
Also known as - Small–flowered Crane's–bill, Small Geranium
Small–flowered Cranesbill is a small almost prostrate annual plant growing to 10–30cm (4–12in) high on banks, roadsides, field margins and meadows from June to September. Common in England becoming rarer to the north and west. Long stalked dark green deeply cut leaves into usually three lobes, themselves further cut into three smaller lobes, as a basal rosette. Red coloured stems with short hairs and solitary or opposite leaves on shorter stalks than the basal leaves. Actinomorphic pink or light purple heart shaped flowers 4–10mm (0.15–0.4in) across or five petals, five hairy sepals and ten stamens.
Can be confused with Dove’s Foot Cranesbill which has long hairs and less deeply cut leaves whilst the hair on Small Flowered Cranesbills' stems and leaf–stalks are very short, both species often grow in the same location.
