Common Zinia - Zinnia elegans

Zinia is another of our species that is originally a native of Mexico, grown elsewhere as a colourful annual garden ornamental that has become naturalised in many parts of the world including Australia, the USA and parts of Europe. The popular garden varieties have several hundred cultivars.
Growing to around 75cm (30in) in height on upright, branching stems, it has terminal solitary flower heads about 5cm (2in) across in bright pink, red, white, yellow, orange or purple forms with dark centers and yellow anthers, some forms are striped, speckled or bicoloured. Lanceolate ribbed opposite, sessile leaves which clasp the stem at the base, of a rather pale green colour, 2–10cm (0.8–4.0in) long and 1–2cm (0.4–0.8in) wide, are rough to the touch.
FBCP do not advise or recommend that Common Zinia – Zinnia elegans is eaten or used as an herbal remedy. Common Zinia is not edible.
