In 1665 during the second great plague which ravaged the U.K., the Government and monarchy was relocated to the relative safety of Oxford. Whilst there the Oxford Gazette became the official journal of the Crown, and so when King Charles II and the government returned to London it moved with them and became the London Gazette. Since then certain legal and statutory notices have been published in the London Gazette on a daily basis through to the present day. A trawl through their on–line archives for the Aldershot Brick and Tile Works Company, Eggar family members and several other search terms has resulted in the following information.

It could be surmised from these records in the London Gazette that brick making like many others was an industry fraught with perils – costs, debts, failures, bankruptcy, resurrection – however the company operated from at least 1858 until around 1938, a period of 80 years, at a time when brick manufacturing underwent a massive change from being a small very localised rural craft industry, to that of a large industrialised industry with far fewer and larger companies.

The Aldershot Brick and Tile Company did not have a bad run really, Aldershot prospered and expanded so there must have been some money to be made from the underlying London Clays. Exhaustion of the clay reserves on site and the expansion of Aldershot town right up to the brickworks boundaries, ironically, some of it built with the brickworks own bricks, was probably the final straw for the Aldershot Brick and Tile Works Company (AB&TWC) who were finally struck off the register of the Companies Register in April 1972.

The London Gazette (website) –
13th November 1874 – Charles Muskett Luccock a Silk Mercer and creditor of AB&TWC petitions for the winding up of the company.
11th December 1874 – Henry Cater and John Walker, of the Grove Steam Boiler Works and creditors of AB&TWC petition for the winding up of the company.
2nd March 1875 – Stephen Lewin, a Timber Merchant and Iron Founder and creditor of AB&TWC petitions for the winding up of the company.
23rd March 1875 – An order dated 13th March 1875 is made for the winding up of AB&TWC from the petition by Stephen Lewin, Timber Merchant and Iron Founder, creditor.
26th March 1875 – The Master of the Rolls sets the 8th April 1875 as the date in chambers for the appointment of an Official Liquidator for AB&TWC.
26th March 1875 – The Master of the Rolls appoints William Henry McCreight of Grays Inn, public accountant to be the Official Liquidator for AB&TWC.
27th April 1875 – Creditors of AB&TWC are required to send details of claims against the company to the official liquidator, William Henry McCreight, and if required their Solicitors to prove such claims in person. Adjudication of claims is set for 7th June 1875[2]. There is no record of the liquidation of the Aldershot Brick and Tile Works Company Ltd, at the London Gazette but the National Archives does show a record for the liquidation proceedings. Date: 1875–1876[3]
31st January 1882 – The Guildford County Court sets 23rd of March 1882 for the public examination at the Town Hall of the debts of Frederick Eggar, Brick and Tile Manufacturer, declared a Bankrupt[4]. Charles Minshull of Cornhill London, Chartered Accountant, is Trustee of the property of the bankrupt.
17th February 1882 – A meeting of the creditors of Frederick Eggar, Brick and Tile Manufacturer of Aldershot (bankrupt), is held at the Town Hall on the 20th day of February 1882. To consider sanctioning the acceptance by the Trustee of a composition offered by the bankrupt of 1s. 6d. in the pound, and for the annulling of the order of adjudication made against the bankrupt.
2nd May 1882 – Reporting the a meeting at the Town Hall on the 20th February 1882 where it was agreed to accept the offer by the bankrupt of 1s. 6d. in the pound and annul the adjudication against him.
21st November 1882 – The partnership of Mina Antoinette Airlie Cresswell and Frederick Eggar trading as Rose, Eggar, and Co.[5], Manufacturers of Bricks, Tiles, and Pottery, at Aldershot, is dissolved. Mina Antoinette Airlie Cresswell pays all debts owed by the firm.
18th December 1883 – The partnership of Rose Cresswell and N. P. Trevenen, trading as Trevenen and Co.[5], Brick and Tile Merchants, is dissolved. R. Cresswell now continues trading as Trevenen and Co. and takes the debts.
16th September 1884 – R. Cresswell (wife of Henry William Cresswell) as Trevenen and Co., AB&TWC, Brick and Tile Manufacturer, is declared bankrupt under order number 664.
7th December 1934 (2 pages) – Evesons (Coal) Limited, Coal Merchants, of Warwick a creditor of AB&TWC petitions for the winding up of the company.
26th May 1972 – Pursuant to the Companies Act 1948, in list 2502 the Aldershot Brick and Tile Works Company Limited is finally struck off the list of companies.

No record seems to exist in the London Archive for the adjudication of creditors claims against The Aldershot Brick and Tile Works Company from the 7th June 1875 date, however they seem to keep trading as the next record is that of "Frederick Eggar, Brick and Tile Manufacturer, declared a Bankrupt" in the 31st January 1882 issue. No records seem to exist in the London Archive of Frederick Eggar being made bankrupt except for the 31st January 1882 reference to – "In the Matter of Frederick Eggar, of Woking, in the county of Surrey, and Aldershot, in the county of Southampton, Brick and Tile Manufacturer, adjudicated a Bankrupt on the 10th day of January, 1882."
